It was a warm day in 1979 that ACME's relationship with the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute began. Over one thousand runners ran in the first annual ACME Merit-thon held in Glastonbury and $5,500 was raised to support the Jimmy Fund. A Bike Tour was added to the race, and in 1992 it was decided to concentrate on basketball, with an annual "3 on 3" Tournament held at the University of Hartford and Trinity College.
The major fundraising activity since the year 2000 has been the "Ultimate
Sports Fantasy Auction" conducted on WTIC NewsTalk Radio. Each day a very
special sports experience is auctioned "on-air" with the proceeds
being contributed to the Jimmy Fund. The sporting events, the "Ultimate
Sports Fantasy Auction", and the generous support of suppliers have
resulted in contributions of over 2 million dollars.
Although the Jimmy Fund is ACME's official charity, there is also strong support from its officers for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford, the Leukemia Society, and the Intensive Education Academy in West Hartford.
